NEW YORK 2021

A CHANGE OF SCENERY.

This concept sounds so obvious when talking about travel, but that has honestly been the mindset going into our last two trips. We haven’t traveled anywhere new since late 2019, so when visiting familiar territory like Mexico City and New York, we’ve thought: “let’s enjoy it like we live there”. Having friends at each location definitely helps make planning feel much easier and nights out incredibly natural (especially those like our dear friends Marcus and R’El of The Place I Was Telling You About).

Now let's not get it twisted— we definitely had places and things we wanted to experience. We just moved through the city at a much easier pace than usual. So this is definitely not intended to be a city guide or anything like that (seriously, check out Marcus and R’El for that), but rather, a glimpse into what we got to experience in New York.

AIME LEON DORE

We know how silly it sounds to have a store at the top of our vacation to-do list, but if you know us, you know how big of fans we are of this brand, and that we’d never gotten to visit ALD’s flagship store in the heart of NoLita, since learning of the brand a few years ago.

The experience did not disappoint, as the staff, coffee, and overall vibes were top notch. Honestly, the only down-side was the scaffolding above the storefront for building renovations. But I suppose that just means we’re gonna have to visit again soon…

ABOVE THE RIM

One of our favorite things about traveling is when we get hit with (pleasant) unexpected moments. We were walking back to our room from when we heard some commotion from the park just down the street from our Airbnb. It turned out to be an intense amateur league basketball game. Without saying a word to each other, we both slowed down to take it in. We each only intended to watch for a minute or so, but we ended up hanging out for about half and hour watching these talented kids leave it all on the court.

We’ve been lucky enough now to have visited New York several times together. And while we love the idea of trying to blend in like locals, we feel that it would be a crime not to enjoy those big moments the city has to offer. So we decided a few trips ago that we would plan to do ONE tourist-y thing per trip.

This one was an easy decision, as neither one of us had been to this landmark.

What you don’t see in this blog post are some really great moments with some really great people in some really great places. Did we take photos at Cervo’s and the Seaport and post them to Stories? Of course. But sometimes it’s nice leaving the big camera in the room and doing what we set out to do: simply change the scenery.
